Darleigh Thunderbolt (Gun), was born 22nd May 2002, and started trialing in October 2004. He gaining a COM in his second trial, and then WON on his fourth novice run, which was in the Dukeries Novice trial at Bellister, Northumberland on the 13th November 2004. Gun had one more run that season which was the Dukeries All Age Stake at Atherstone, Warwickshire, which he also WON.
In 2005 Gun competed in three 2-day open stakes, reaching the second day in all three trials, however he did not finish any of the trials, to gain any awards.
In 2006 Gun competed in four 2-day open stakes, reaching the second day on three occasions with one COM and a FIRST in the Midland Counties F.T.S. 2-day stake at Ampton on the 7 & 8 September. We returned to Ampton for the Retriever championship in December of that year where Gun failed on a bird late on the second day when there were fifteen dogs remaining.
In 2007 Gun competed in five 2-day open stakes, reaching the second day on four occasions with one COM, one SECOND in the Carmarthenshire 2-day stake at Alvington on the 22nd & 23rd October and a FIRST for the second year running in the Midland Counties F.T.S. 2-day stake at Ampton on the 11th & 12th October. This win made him up to a FT CH. We competed in the Retriever championship at Windsor in December failing on a running Partridge late on the second day when there were nine dogs remaining.
2008 has been another very good year. Gun competed in five 2-day open stakes, winning on his fourth run which was the Suffolk Gundog Club 2-day open at Ampton on the 27th & 28th October. This victory meant that he qualified for the Retriever Championship, for the third year in succession. Lauder in Scotland, was this years venue, and once again we reached the second day, but failed to get any further. Only six of the original forty-four competitors made the third and final day.
Gun is a very kind, laid back dog, who really wants to please, and handles extremely well. As a young dog he took time to come to hand, but with experience, has come a level of confidence and ability, which belies his early years. He combines a calm nature, which allows him to handle pressure very well, along with the ability to attack difficult cover and outrun on a long blind with enthusiasm, style and speed. His greatest strength, which I believe is clearly shown by his trailing record, is his consistency.
